Montevideo is the capital city of Uruguay, a country which is well known for its meat and wines. Best places to taste premium beef and good wines can be found at Mercado del Puerto - an old market converted into a sort of food hall, where some of the best restaurants in the city can be found. Good offer of fish and seafood as well as best beef. Ideal for lunch but no so much for dinner, as this tends to be a rather lonely area in the evenings. Advisable to come and leave by taxi after sunset. Recommended places at the Mercado del Puerto : "El Palenque" or "La Posada del Puerto" . If you want to taste a typical drink, you should try "medio y medio" at "Roldos" ( a mix of white wine and champagne) to wash down their delicious finger sandwiches. Another option could be the different barbacue restaurants (called parrillas) along San Jose St. in town. This is whithin easy reach from most hotels in town. If you are looking for Italian food, your best option will be Panini's or Bellini. Excellent Italian cuisine. Rather expensive but worth eery penny. Punta Carretas is the area of the city where the best restaurants can be found. A exellent choice is "La Perdiz" opposite Montevideo Sheraton Hotel or "Va Pentella" another excellent Itlalian restaurant in that area. As to Uruguayan wines, Don Pascual is one of the best brands for both red and white wines, famous for its tannat, cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon grey. Casa Filguieras also offers excellent white wines.
