The Chili River has several sections where you can do whitewater rafting. The water is approximately 8 degress Celsius, which is pretty cold. One popular section, only 7 km's from Arequipa downtown has grade II and III rapids and is suitable for beginners and families. Sometimes you'll need to walk about 20 meters along the trip because of the rocks.

The rafting itself takes 1 hour - 1h 30min, but it feels enough, since you have to work hard on paddling. The total time of the trip is about 3h, and the agencies pick you up and bring afterwards back to your hotel.

It's a great experience and the companies will supply you with all the usual equipment and sometimes even hardheads... The safety is taken seriously, the guides are knowledgeable, and there is a safety kayaker accompanying the boats.
