In the event an emergency in mainland China, the police telephone number is 110, fire is 119 and ambulance is 120.  In Hong Kong and Macau, dialing 999 will contact emergency services.  Although China is still basically a police state, they maintain a hands-off policy with tourists to ensure that they leave with a good impression.  The police wear green uniforms and caps, and Chinese who commit crimes against foreigners are treated very harshly.  Tourists make obvious targets for thieves, so visitors should conceal passports and money from pickpockets. It is also advisable to avoid wearing flashy jewelry or handle money in public.
