Lamu is not a tourist area and so most of the shops cater for local people and their needs. There are very few tourist souvenirs to buy. A few years ago you couldn't buy a bar of chocolate here but thankfully that is not the case now - look in the fridge in 'The Big Shop' (sic). Most of the shops close at midday but open again in the late afternoon.  Lamu has lovely traditional furniture making industry; beds, chairs etc which can be exported. There are stalls selling local crafts, baskets and local beaded jewellery on the sea front. 'Baraka' in the street behind Palace hotel, has quality jewellery, clothing and artifacts from Africa and Indonesia which leads into "Whispers' coffee shop next door - highly recommended. Look too, at a local artists work in the last shack beyond Palace hotel - he sells his printed cards in London!
