Lamu town seafront

Generally Lamu is very safe, although be sensible and don't put temptation in the way. The weekly wage of those fortunate enough to have a job might be as little as £1.50. Put your valuables in the hotel safe straight away on arrival, or at the very least, keep them in a locked suitcase. Do not be conned into parting with money for a trip that might not materialize. Only take boat trips with registered captains; they have identity tags. The boat crew are usually completely trustworthy - after all they want to sell you more trips! Take a torch and spare batteries as the nights are DARK. Do not walk alone at night. Women should dress modestly, respect the Muslim culture, wear a sarong/trousers/long skirt and shirt with sleeves when going to/from the beach.
