One of the great experiences for souvenir hunters is the Maasai Market, which can be found on different days at Westgate, Village Market and the city center. How many stall holders are Maasi it's difficult to say - maybe some Maasi are short, but the legendary fierceness comes through in the haggling. Be prepared first for the handshake of friendship, followed by items thrust in your hands so you can't escape, then being asked how much you're willing to pay, and of course the outrageous demands and the heartbreaking stories of hardship that your purchase will help ease. Be resolute and enjoy the game, remembering that this is their livelihood after all. If you don't want to be overwhelmed by attention wait till the market gets busy. Oh, and be prepared to come away with more than you wanted, hopefully at some really good prices. Wooden giraffe anyone?
