Ekushey Boi Mela (Book Fair): Every year throughout the month of February there is the Amar Ekushey boi mela which is the largest book fair in the country. Held inside the university of Dhaka, it is a vibrant place with the largest collection of books.

Pohela Boishakh Festival (Bengali New Year): on 14th April the city comes alive with everyone dressing up in their new year's best (red white saris for girls and panjabis for guys) and hitting the streets for a fantastic time. The main attraction is at Ramna Botmul (the base of an age old banyan tree) where a cultural organisation, Chhayanaut, welcomes the new year with poetry recitation and songs. There are a bunch of other performances by similar platforms all within a 1km radius centring Shahbagh intersection. The procession starts around 6am from the Fine Arts Faculty (Charukala) of Dhaka University. Be warned though that roads are packed and the weather is generally very hot.
Recently the entire stretch of the road in front of the parliament building, Manik Miah Avenue, is painted on the eve of Pohela Boishakh. This goes on for several hours resulting in serious traffic congestion in the area.
