Banking sector in Bangladesh is perhaps the most developed field in the service sector of the country. More than 45 different foreign and local banks are operating in Bangladesh. The banks are automated providing online banking, phone banking, SMS banking and other services. They are also equipped with Automated Teller Machines (ATM terminals). As such, you would find both on-site and off-site ATM terminals of different banks at all major locations in cities. All ATM terminals and most shopping outlets accept major credit cards and debit cards like Visa, Visa Plus, Visa Electron, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, etc. Major restaurants and hotels also accept globally recognized credit and debit cards. Travelers Cheques are also widely accepted and can be exchanged at any bank.

The currency of Bangladesh is called 'Taka' which consists of 100 'Paisa'. Taka is available in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 denomination notes (bills). Coins are available for 5, 2 and 1 Taka denominations. Taka is a free floating currency, where the exchange rate is set by market forces (supply and demand). The exchange rate, as of April 2013, is US $1 = 80 Taka.

Other than banks, there are also many foreign currency exchange shops in major cities that usually give better exchange rates than banks. In Dhaka, you can change your foreign currency into Taka at the Airport, Gulshan 1, Gulshan 2, Banani, Motijheel, Dilkusha and at any foreign currency exchange shops. You can also change money from most of the branches of the banks, producing your passport. Usually it is not recommended to change your foreign currency at the hotels because other places provide better rates. You can also send money into Bangladesh through numerous international money transfer companies like Western Union, Money Gram, etc.
