As the city is the cultural and educational center of the country, there are several universities here that you may want to visit during your stay in Dar es Salaam. The most famous is the University of Dar es Salaam, which was originally part of the University of East Africa. Other institutes of higher learning include the Open University of Tanzania, the International Medical and Technological University and the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University.
Cultural centers in the city include the National Museum, the Village Museum, the House of Art and the Botanical Gardens. You may also want to visit the National Stadium, where the country’s football (soccer) clubs play matches and international games are held.For natural attractions, you will probably want to go to one of Tanzania’s national parks for a safari; you will be required to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle with driver, so do not bother to bring your own car. You may also visit the beaches along the Indian Ocean coast, or drive up to Bagamoyo, the oldest town in the country. This is the original capital of German East Africa and home to several aboriginal ruins. Off the coast of Dar es Salaam is Zanzibar, an island with some very good beaches and beautiful scenery.
