The national fixed line telecom company is Telkom and there are four cellular (mobile) providers - Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Virgin Mobile. A traveller to South Africa can buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card and purchase increments of airtime. While costs are high by global standards, there is good and comprehensive telecommunications coverage throughout the country. Still, all incoming calls are always free and costs are much less than using your own phone - assuming it works.  Purchasing prior to your trip is an added convenience as you are ready to go as soon as you land and will already have the phone number.
