You can rent a car at the Belize International Airport. Several car rental companies can be found right in the parking lot of the airport.  Be sure to get a good map and directions from your hotel or wherever you are going. Know that no matter how good the directions are, there will probably be a fair amount of guessing and hoping that you are on the correct road. While there are signs directing you from town to town, the signs are few and far between and you may go many, many miles wondering if you are still on the right track!

If renting a car, be sure to rent a very sturdy 4x4 -- even the low-end 4x4s have some trouble navigating the bumpier roads. My advice is to only drive during the day...finding yourself on a very dark, very bumpy, very long and twisty road during the night can be a harrowing experience.

Also, you'll notice speedbumps are EVERYWHERE. And I mean everywhere. You really have to slow down when approaching these...they're frequent, high and tend to have a lot of locals milling around.

Although the sides roads are bumpy and dusty there are three paved highways running thru that pretty much get you where you need to go. They are : the Northen Highway which runs between the Mexican border and Belize CIty. The Western Highway, running btw. Belize City to the border of Guatamala and the Hummingbird Highway.
