Culture... Texas... We don't have enough room here to give the culture of Texas its due. The state of Texas is larger then all but 39 of the worlds countries! It has the 16th largest GNP of all nations. It’s just darn big and could be a whole country to itself (which many Texans are proud to point out). Across this broad expanse you've got many, many different cultures (so be sure to check out the city culture sections for more info!)
Major Regions:
West Texas:
Sometimes called dustbowl, you're very likely to find small towns, cowboys and oil rigs spread over the area. Heavy Mexican influence can be found throughout with El Paso seeming to almost be a Mexican city. Most Texans view the western part of the state as a campground or backyard. Very laid back and historic, you'll be able to take your time and feel some of what the Old West was like.
Hill Country:
You can think of this as central Texas. Many will tell you that this is the most scenic part of the state. Heavily settled by German immigrants it’s not uncommon to find excellent sausage and beers here. Some of Texas' best beers are made here. Austin, the state capital, is known as the live music capital. Many great bands and artists have gotten their start here. Add in the University of Texas and you've got a vibrant young crowd to go with the amazing scenery and top notch history.
Gulf Coast:
Sticking just to the coast, you'll encounter a wide range of experiences. Starting at the border with Mexico, you can head north and will first encounter Corpus Christi. This city is very close to South Padre island, one of the main spring break retreats for the nation’s college students. Be ready for a party around that time of year. Heading up the coast, you'll run into Galveston. This port town has grown to be an exciting community and has its own Mardi Gras. The Texas coast doesn't have the best beaches in the world, but it does have some of the best weather in Texas as the gulf breezes keep it temperate.
Major Cities:
Dallas/Ft. Worth:
Far and away this is the most upscale and metropolitan part of the state. You'll find most folks in Dallas enjoy the high life and consider themselves a slight step above other Texans (but not in a bad way). Be prepared for the best dressed cowboys and cowgirls you've ever scene.
Houston:
In direct comparison to Dallas is Houston, this large city has a very laid back and accepting attitude. You'll see jeans even in the best restaurants or at the world famous Houston Grand Opera. The quirky Art Car Parade (and museum) melds with the upscale Galleria Mall to give you the full spectrum of experiences. Be ready to be surprised by what’s around the next corner.
State of the State :
If there's one constant in Texas it’s that everything is bigger in Texas. Yes, that phrase leads to many jokes and has been abused more then most, but it’s true. You'll find Texans to be larger then life and accepting of everyone. There are fewer native Texans in Texas then "foreigners" (as anyone not born in Texas is known). This makes the state a great melting pot of many cultures and life styles. Y'all come’ on down to Texas and set a spell - you'll feel right at home.
