From the early morning in the Black Hills to the end of the day in Pierre you can experience “South Dakota 24/7” by Rich Smolan and David Elliot Cohen look at a full day in South Dakota, chronicling the lives of the people who call the state home.

While the HBO series offers one look at the same lawless town of Deadwood, several books will shed a bit more light on this Black Hills boomtown. “Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills,” by David Milch offers a deeper look at some of the colorful characters made famous, or dare we say infamous, on TV. And for another look John Ames’ “The Real Deadwood: True Life Histories of Will Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Outlaw Towns and Other Characters of the Lawless West,” strips away the myth and concentrates on the facts. Likewise, the town didn’t just fade away when the gold rush ended. “Deadwood, 1876 – 1976 (Images of America)” by Bev Pechan and Bill Groethe chronicles 100 years of this wild town.

The history of South Dakota cannot be fully appreciate or understood without knowing about the people’s who lived in the region before the settlers arrived. “Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West,” recounts the forgotten stories of the Plains Indians.
