While the Swan River Colony was populated by some 10,000 convicts from 1850 until 1868, the city is considered extremely safe today by most world standards. Known for a riotous past during its boom periods, today visitors can walk the streets without having to worry about such threats of violence.
Regular efforts are continually made by the police and the city’s urban planners to maintain the safety on the streets. As a result western Australia has a lower crime rate of violent crime than most of the other states in Australia.
You can walk the streets and feel a sense of security, thanks to monitor by close circuit TV cameras that are located in the central business district and in the Northbridge areas. There are some 135 cameras and these are monitored 24 hours a day, and there are also push to talk buttons with direct communication to the police, and these are located in some of the shopping malls and throughout Northbridge as well. After hours you can also catch a cab at a supervised taxicab stand that is open from 11pm until 4am. While this level of monitoring may turn off some visitors, it has helped make Perth a genuinely safe city.
