With 9,000 years of history there is much to learn about the small Mediterranean island of Cyprus and its ever changing culture. The ancient land is revealed in Veronica Tatton-Brown’s “Ancient Cyprus,” which look at the island during the Greek and Roman eras, while the Medieval past is also explored in Pter W. Edbury’s “The Kingdom of Cyprus and the Crusades, 1191-1374.” This book looks at the history of Cyprus and how it was conquered by Richard I of England, “The Lionheart,” sold to the Knights Templar and sold again to Guy de Lusignan, a king without a land to rule!

The modern history of Cyprus has been chronicled in several books, including Robert Holland’s “Britain and the Revolt in Cyprus, 1954-1959.” The recently published “Divided Cyprus: Modernity, History, And an Island in Conflict (New Anthropologies)” by Yiannis Papadakis, Nicos Peristianis and Gisela Welz looks at the effects that led to the partitioning of the land, and exploes how the “island of Aphrodite” has become the home of so much confrontation. The role of various outside grabs for power is the theme of “Isle of Discord: Nationalism, Imperialism and the Making of the Cyprus Problem,” by Yiannis Stefanidis and Ioannis D. Stefanidis.
