Getting around on the islands of Malta and Gozo are quite straightforward. From the main square in the capital Valletta, you can access almost all routes around the main island. It's worth noting that buses with 2 numbers operate to and from the city, with those showing 3 numbers operating to Sliema promenade.
The present cost is around 25c (40p) per journey but you can buy one, three, five and seven day tickets (a 5 day ticket costs 8eur) which allows you unlimited travel around the island including the airport route.
Buses get very full at peak times so be prepared to think ahead and one tip from a local was to get the bus in the opposite direction a few stops and then change back further up your original route at a quieter point in the journey to ensure a seat!
This was tried on the '60' routes by travelling a few stops to tower road then getting an almost empty bus back to valletta which filled up to bursting point a few stops down.
The buses range from around 75 years old through to 1970s coaches with a few low floor ones. They are an absolute experience and the routes do allow you to experience the locals areas off the main tourist trails - like service 27 to Marsaloxx bay which weaves its way through old streets passing traditional stone houses and farms to the most stunning bay with the islands best fish restaurants.
Do take a look at the ADT maltabus website for their history and don't forget that every Sunday morning in the bus station there is a flea market where all sorts of goods are traded - well worth a visit!

Next is the Gozo ferry. It's a regular ferry with a 30 minute crossing time between the main Malta island and that of Gozo, a popular tourist destination.
The ferry has on board a small shop, cafe and is basically a roll on roll off car ferry which is a quick and easy way to island hop, especially during the summer months.

Finally, there is the taxi. Fixed fee vouchers can be bought from the airport and a typical airport to St Julians bay drive is about 12 eur. Always ask how much for the journey as meters ar not always reset after the previous journey.
Booking is by phone from any hotel or restaurant or in person in the bus station square.
