Malta International Airport is located in Luqa, www.maltairport.com  is just a short drive from Valletta. The four-storey airport has many facilities, including a chapel, a viewing gallery, and all the usual shops and eateries. The majority of planes are operated by Air Malta, the island country’s national air company, but Air France, British Jet, Emirates, Alitalia, British Airways, Ryanair ,Lufthansa , Transavia and KLM also service this airport.

Flights are available to most major Western European cities such as London, Paris, Rome, Munich and Amsterdam, as well as a few others in North Africa and Eastern Europe (including Athens, St. Petersburg, Cairo, Casablanca and Istanbul). Air Malta also offers services to Ireland, Spain, Austria and some other European countries on a more limited basis.

Coming to Valletta by sea is also a popular option. You can book a cruise through a travel company or use the ferry services that shuttle passengers between Sicily and Malta regularly. www.virtuferries.com  Ferries from a few other Mediterranean ports may be available as well, but with less frequent service.

International car rental companies—Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National Sixt and Thrifty—all have offices inside the Welcomers’ Hall. You can call them to arrange a reservation by dialing +356 2369 and an extension number (Avis: 6077, Budget: 6068, Europcar: 6507, Hertz: 6078, National: 6069, Sixt: 6460, Thrifty: 6344). Other local car hire firms such as Tony's cars should not be ruled out and a search through the local telephone directory will uncover some local bargains.

Getting to and from the airport from all parts of the main island is easy. Taxis booked from the airport are fixed price dependant upon the distance. A typical fare from the airport to Sliema and St Julian's is lm8.75(20.38 euro) and the taxis are almost all large old Mercedes with English speaking drivers. To book a taxi from the airport, visit the kiosk in the arrivals hall. Here is a link to the airports list of available airport taxi and shuttle services. They will be waiting for you at the airport and drive you straight to your accomodation. So everything will be organized for  you .

Buses also go to and from the airport every 30 minutes during normal operating hours (7am - 09pm). These are much cheaper,a normal fare is  0.47 euro,  and a five day ticket presently costs 11.65 euro per person for unlimited travel around the island. Gozo has it's own similar ticket.

Finally, for travellers off to Gozo, for speed and practicality, a taxi to the ferry is strongly suggested.
