Zakynthos is the temporal home to Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. The beaches of Lagana and Geraka are two of the beaches that these turtles choose every year, from May to October, to lay their eggs.

It is at night when they come out of the sea and perform this ritual that is now on the verge of disappearing. Because Caretta-Caretta turtles are an endangered species. Visitors are warned against approaching the turtles as they do their job and afterwards, once the eggs are laid on the beach, and you should be aware of it. The Greek government and other organizations are commited to protecting the turtles and constantly watch the beaches chosen by the turtles for reproduction.

The turtles dig their nests in the sand where they will lay more than 100 eggs. The moment the eggs are deposited to the moment that the babies go back to the sea (a two-month period) is a very sensitive time as people can interfere in the process, or other sea animals; pollution and trash and even noise can affect them too. These turtles are very vulnerable animals and one out of four thousand survive their childhood.

Other beaches favored by Caretta-Caretta turtles are Kalamaki, Daphni, Pelouzo, Marathonisi and Sekania.
