Greek food is often misrepresented as pitas, chips, baklavah or gyros. These American "favorites" can certainly be found within certain tourist trips, but venture outside the resorts. Corfu and its surrounding villages offer a vast selection of dishes, Greek or international.
The Venetian influence is more prevalent in Corfiote cuisine than the French. Sofrito, slice veal marinated in vinegar and Panstitsada, a meat and pasta dish are part of the local delicacies. Also, the proximity of Corfu to water makes fish widely available. Keep a watchful eye on the fish prices as they are sold according to weight and not portions.
Tavernas are the main variety of dining experiences in Corfu. They are family owned and usually operate the entire day. Achavari Park is an example of one such restaurant. It serves traditional Greek fare and a few international dishes. There are, too, tavernas that only serve seafood called psarotavernas.
Overall, the food is a fresh mix of locally grown vegetables and raised meats. To be safe, avoid dishes that contain ground meats rather than entire meat portions. Afterwards, a cup of Greek coffee with dessert can help prepare visitors for a evening/morning of Ionian nightlife.
The Liston is a perfect area for coffee and dessert. Lindos Cafe overlooks the beach and Art Cafe behind the palace is tranquil. However, avoid the Liston for dinner. It should be reserved for breakfast, lunch, and dessert. Certain establishments are reminiscent of tourist traps.
