Santorini is an island, so the majority of the sports and activities enjoyed by the travelers who visit Santorini are related to the water. Visitors are reminded that even when the weather is not too hot, the sun can be detrimental. Sunscreen should always be worn and visitors should make sure to drink enough bottled water to stay hydrated.
One of the most popular sporting activities is sea kayaking. Visitors can rent all of the required equipment, including kayaks and life preservers, from the agency and can enjoy either full day trips or half day trips. The preferred rental agency is the G. Argyros Travel Agency. This and other travel agencies are located online at http://www.travelling.gr/agents/ALLag... .
Fishing is another popular activity in Santorini. White Beach is a favored beach for fishing, but it is only accessible by boat so boat rental will have to be figured in to the cost of fishing in this area. The upside is that it is the least crowded of all tourist fishing spots. Reviews of this beach as well as other sporting activities and locations in Santorini can be found at http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/... .
Diving is also very popular, with the waters around the island offering very good visibility and spectacular underwater architecture that makes up for the lack of fish and coral. Water temperature is about 22C - you will need a wetsuit. Diving in the caldera is possible, although many will find it disappointing, but the south side of the island features a range of wonderful caves that can be explored with the aid of a guide. Most dives are accessed by using boats from Kamari or Perissa, from where it takes 20 minutes to get to the south side of the island and 40 minutes to get to the volcanos or Aspronisi. The dive schools offer the usual PADI courses and cater for snorkelers, those who just want to try out the underwater world, and experienced divers. Prices (2009) are about 80 Euros for 2 dives including all equipment and boat fees with discounts for additional dives. The quality of dive schools varies, but Navy's is recommended for its professional approach and quality of staff.
