Visitors have three basic options for getting around Santorini; they can either rent a car or a moped, they can take taxis wherever they go, or they can travel on the local bus system. All of these, or any combination of these, options are viable internal travel options for most visitors.
The majority of Santorini visitors opt to rent a car for use during their visit. There are a number of big-name car rental companies available in the area, along with several local companies (see Car and Other Rentals Inside Page). Drivers should know that there are a number of no-parking areas throughout town and police are vigilant about not only ticketing cars parked in these areas but in removing the license plates off of these cars. This can be a huge hassle for visitors and so drivers should always be careful when parking. Visitors who want to have their own mode of transportation but do not want to pay the cost of rental cars often rent mopeds for travel around Santorini. Safe driving is a must but this is a definite option for many travelers.
People who do not wish to drive in Santorini don’t actually have to. The bus system is an efficient system which is reliable, inexpensive and extensive enough to reach nearly all major tourist attractions. More information is available on the Santorini Public Transportation Inside Page. It should be noted that the bus stops running at midnight, so travelers planning to be out and about after that should plan on getting a taxi.
