More than 2000 food business exist in an area of about 60 square miles, ranging from cheap gyros take-aways to luxurious private dining restaurants. One of the first sites, any visitor arriving by ferry to Santorini port of Athinios , besides the cliffs, are the restaurants in the port. These are the undiscovered restaurants of Santorini, and offer to any visitor a respite from the heat and hectic pace of the main areas of Santorini.
But what really means Greek tavern and what is the difference between any other type of restaurants all over the world, has nothing to do with gastronomy even if the word is Greek origin...
You see in Greece, people pay less attention in what exactly food will be rather than enjoy eating it in a good mood, among people who dance and sing together, enjoying life!
That is the only advice you must keep in order to discover Greece and the Greeks!
Visit santorini portal with google search and what comes first, is where you can exprience few of those personalities who run small local and inexpensive taverns that will offer you that experience....
All tourists restaurants taste the same around the world, because they are made for tourists! You 'll never be able to discover a foreign Country, if you don't get, what the locals do!
Readers of this article will greatly appreciate this expert advice on Santorini restaurants. These reviews were taken from actual Santorini restaurant customers. They were asked to fill in a questionnaire based on their dining experience in most Santorini restaurants, on a scale of 0-20. A 5 year project with over 1.2 million reviews provided the results of table (2).
Unfortunately only restaurants with overall score of at least 6 out of 20 are in this list. The rest didn’t make it. (restaurants marked with an "*" are the top 5 restaurants of the island)
You should consider also the fact that most of those selected restaurants are in the most touristic areas, so any evaluation of customer's opinion should be related with the local tourist industry and those who are a part of it....
Many small taverns all around the island are hardly recommended by tourist agents, because they are not English speaking establishments or they don't accept groups. They are also not part of the survey, not because the food quality is lower but mainly because they have never been heard of or visited, or dealing with those who run the tourist business on the island!
So if you are a tourist, you can try any of those listed here , but if you need to discover Santorini, try to get at least once in those proposed on santorini portal, considering that they are mostly local people taverns, for real people , locals Greeks from anywhere and only for some lucky tourists!

Note: Price of dinner includes, cover charge, a bottle of water divided by two, a glass of open/house wine, average priced appetizer or salad divided by two, average priced main course and a dessert divided by two.
Of course your Santorini restaurant bill will include what you ordered! Plus the following:
Cover Charge: Your bill in any Santorini restaurant will include a charge ranging from €1.50 to €8. By law, the cover charge is the cost of a napkin. Almost €5 for a napkin??? Outrageous! In conclusion, Santorini restaurants have this charge to balance their high taxations. It is like the contribution of the customer towards the Santorini restaurant taxes.
Bottled Water: Some Santorini restaurants will bring you a bottle of water upon your arrival, simply open it and serve it to your glasses. Cheers!!! Cold refreshing water! Just what you need in the humid and hot atmosphere! What you don’t know is that they will charge you for it a minimum of €3. At least they should ask you if you want any. Where has that famous Greek democracy gone? In fact Santorini restaurants are obligated by law to ask if you would like any. Despite that there are no law restrictions on how much they are going to charge, only that it has to be clearly mentioned in the menu. A 3-4 euro charge is reasonable, anything above that is a rip-off.
Food Cost: A fine dining Santorini restaurant will have a 35-50% food cost. Lower quality Santorini restaurants have as low as 15% food cost. A column called “Value for Money”, in table No. 2, indicates the food cost of each Santorini restaurant, thus the quality of materials used in your dinner.
Taxation: Santorini restaurants pay 6% taxation off their incomes, for food products and a 13% for alcoholic beverages. Santorini restaurants also pay 2% local Municipality tax. All included in your Santorini restaurant bill.
Caldera View: View of the Caldera and Volcano in Santorini restaurants is something customers pay for. This is because it is something businesses themselves pay. A property overlooking the volcano is 400% more expensive to rent or buy than one looking at the back side of the island.
Staff Wages: An average waiter in Santorini restaurants will cost €1200 monthly (5 days a week / 8 hours a day), plus €350 insurance and on top another €150 for taxation. That comes to a grand total of about €2100 per month. Similar expenses apply to Santorini restaurants for chefs, cooks, kitchen staff, managers, helpers, etc.
Summer Season: Most Santorini restaurants are open 6 months per year. In business terms it means that they have profits for only half the year, compared to their expenses that are all year round.
Rent Costs: An average 100 square metre property for a Santorini restaurant will cost €3500 monthly, all year round. Same property to buy will cost about one and a half million euros.
Santorini Suppliers: Supplies for Santorini restaurants cost 30-60% more that in the mainland, because it involves transport costs with high taxation. Consider that an average 10kg package costs about €25 to come from Athens to any Santorini restaurant.Restaurant Karma is situated in Oia Santorini
Ambrosia and Nectar - located in Oia, Ambrosia and Nectar is a wonderful restaurant. Even though they were featured on Giada DeLaurentis' Food Network show, the restaurant does not advertise this fact and the servers downplay its significance . It is a place for leisurely dining with impressive views of the sunset. The prices are reasonable and less formal than the sister restaurant, Ambrosia. Still many Giada fans make the prilgrimage to this restaurant and walk away happy they came.
Fanari gourmet restaurant is located in Oia village on the northest part of the caldera.Full sunset view, and excellent gourmet cuisine are offered for a relaxing dinner
