Sholarhio Ouzeri Kouklis (since 1935), Ttipodon 14 Street, Plaka is a great place for everyone to try Greek cuisine at a reasonable price. The area's 'first schoolhouse', next to St. Nikolaos Church, is located in the picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and pathways of Anafiotika down from the Acropolis.
The old schoolhouse is now an old-style 'Ouzeri' with lots of atmosphere - a Plaka institution. It is described as: 'The most traditional family restaurant - Kouklis is the name of an old family in Plaka'. It has oak-beamed ceilings and marble tables with dining available on the covered veranda, inside or upstairs. For real atmosphere of the Plaka sit on the veranda out the front and enjoy the view over Athens to Lykavittos Hill from the end tables - the most popular of course!
At the Sholarhio you are offered the choice of a number of Greek dishes, 18 to 20, for a set price, which also includes bread, a drink and a traditional dessert. Very different from a normal restaurant, but a great way to sample a variety of dishes. The cost is 12 Euros per person = $20 AUD/$15 USD. Credit cards are accepted.
An appetizing array of traditional Greek dishes - a simple but hearty range of 'mezedhes' (small dishes) - are displayed by the waiter for you to choose from - you decide how many. 5 plates would be ample for 2 adults with a selection which included stuffed vine leaves, Greek meatballs, fava beans, lamb casserole and a Greek salad. Something for everyone!
Quoting from their business card: "We offer to your table a platter with 18 Greek specialities and you choose the ones you like. If you are 4 people or more of you, you can choose 10 dishes, and either one litre of wine or one bottle of ouzo or 2 beers or 4 soft drinks plus mineral water, bread and dessert for 12 Euros per person". They are open every day from 11 in the morning until 2 o'clock after midnight.
