Take a worthwhile trip to the Botanic Gardens in Funchal on the island of Madeira.  Why is it worth seeing?  The gardens are very walkable and don't require a great deal of time to cover.  The highlights include very lovely Birds of Paradise plants along with some exotic orchids.  The manicured checker-board gardens create a magnificant photo opportunity.  Along with the luscious plants, are the exotic birds including canaries and other colorful species complete with a talking parrot.  A topiary garden is impressive along with the resident peacocks who spread their lovely colorful feathers for the  group. Naturally, having a guide describe some of the plants adds a more comprehensive touch to the walking experience.
