Visitors to Coimbra have numerous options for getting around the city and the rest of the country, and include by car, bus, train, and taxi.
A personal vehicle is the most convenient form of transportation available in Coimbra, as it allows the greatest freedom and flexibility in travel. However, first time visitors to the country should check out this Driving in Portugal page before deciding to get behind the wheel of a car.
The city of Coimbra is served by a public transportation network of buses and trains. Buses are the best way to get around town, as there are numerous lines that access the most important areas of the city in both upper and lower town. It is also possible to travel through much of the country by coach, as Coimbra is the major bus hub in the Beiras region. There are two stations in the city: Station A (which services long distance destinations) and Station B (which services city destinations).
Taxis are a good way of getting around the immediate city of Coimbra. Generally, taxis will be waiting outside of major public areas such as the airport, train stations, bus stations, and large hotels. If outside of these areas, the best way to get a taxi is to call one of the agencies ahead of time to arrange for a pick-up. For a partial list of companies located in or around the city, check out this Taxi Company List.
