Faro, along with the rest of southern Portugal, is served by the private EVA bus system. The bus station in Faro is located on Avenida da República, just south of the train station.

There are fast buses from Faro to Albufeira, Portimao and Lagos, seven times a day on weekdays but only twice a day at weekends. The journey to Lagos takes 2 hours 10 minutes and costs (June 2008) €5.10

Other local buses radiate from Faro but because these buses stop often, it can be a slow ride. Similarly, there is train service between the towns of southern Portugal, linking also to the rest of the country. However, frequent stops also can make this a slow option for travel. The train from Faro to Lagos is quicker than the bus by about 20 minutes but costs a little more.

Within the city itself, due to its small size, your best bet is to explore the town by foot. Break out a map and your walking shoes (cobblestones and Jimmy Choos really do not mix) and explore the city.
