RECONSTRUCTION WORK IN OLD TOWN ALBUFEIRA - updated 18th June 2008
The project concerns the installation of new sewers and drains, also the creation of pedestrian streets and squares. The area affected includes the Avenida 25 de Abril, Largo Cais Herculano and the adjoining seafront (Fishermen's beach) area of old Albufeira.
The first phase of work in these areas is now complete, apart from the building of a new tourist centre where the fish market once stood and some repair work in the square Largo de 25 Abril, which was badly damaged by the installation of concert stage in August 2007.
The second phase of work is now complete except that the lift at the Peneco end of the beach is still under construction with no date set for its opening.
Work will begin in October 2008 on the installation of new drains and sewers in the area of the Rua 5 Outubro - that's the road that leads to the tunnel under the Sol e Mar Hotel. Those that witnessed the September 30, 2007 flooding will appreciate why this work is needed. Also similar works in 'Bar Street' are understood to be starting at the same time. These two sets of works are certain to cause a lot of disruption and many bars and restaurants will have no option but to close.
This phase of work is scheduled for completion by the end of May 2009 but it is now nearly 3 years behind schedule.
The moving staircases (escalators) are completed - these replace the stairs up the cliff at the end of the beach near the pier.
In addition to these civic works, there is an enormous amount of building development around the town as yet more hotels and apartment blocks are being added to the complement. If you are planning on coming to this area for a holiday, it is strongly recommended that you check with your hotel etc about construction work. The main problems in the summer are dust and noise.
