Just outside of Amsterdam is the true Dutch rural experience the Zaanse Schans, which can be found along a stretch of the river Zaan. The highlights are the working windmills which you can go in. There are also old houses, quirky museums, an adequate restaurant, photo opportunities and wind. 

There are several ways you can reach the Zaanse Schans: 

By bus

You can go to the Zaanse Schans with bus 391, 'The Industrial Heritage line'. This bus departs every 15 minutes from busplatform C and stops right next to the Zaanse Schans. The bus is accessible with a single ticket (which cost €5), a round trip ticket (€10) or a 'Amsterdam & Region Day Ticket' (€13,50).

By bike

The strong legged can cycle to the Zaanse Schans. This will take about 90 minutes and takes you through pretty countryside on great bike paths. There is also an option to return on the train with your bike. 

By train

The Zaanse Schans can also be reached by train. Starting from Amsterdam Central station take the train to Koog Zaandijk station. This train departs every 15 minutes and takes you the station in about 16 minutes. From the station it's a ten minute walk to the Zaanse Schans.
