Originally the Artis Theater when completed in 1892, Hollandsche Schouwburg was the Jewish Theater during early Nazi occupation. Soon it was transormed into the deporation centre where the Jews would report before going to the camps. Few buildings are able to capture both the beauty of Dutch architecture in late 19th Century Amsterdam as clearly as the ugliness of the Nazi occupation that took the lives of 104,000 Jewish Amsterdammers.
