Lucerne is located in the middle of Switzerland, and is high in the Alps. Because of this, the town experiences very cold winters, and mild springs and summers. If you love outdoor activities in the winter, such as skiing and skating, then Lucerne is a paradise awaiting you. If you go just outside of the town you will find that the mountains are beautiful and just waiting to be explored. If you want to visit in warmer weather though, you will also find that there is great hiking and mountain biking to be done in the area. There are many tour groups and guides that often extensive information and help when you want to go around the area. You can also do this on your own. The busier times of year in Lucerne are in the winter because of the skiing and the outdoor sports, and it also gets quite busy during the spring and summer. Many travelers come from some of the bigger cities for a weekend or a bit longer. No matter when you go, you should definitely have some wamer clothes with you on hand at all times. A sweatshirt and some type of pants are recommended, even in the summer. The nights can get quite chilly, and it is good to have it on you just in case.
