Bern is a relatively cold place, so if you are seeking escape from a frigid winter, the Alpine area is obviously not where to go.  Though not Antarctica, months averaging highs in the twenties are not rare, and the winter season can last from early November all the way into mid-March.  The summer, on the other hand, is relatively mild and therefore comfortable, as temps rarely scrape far past the sixties.

In the summer, numerous events take place in this capital city that lure in tourists from throughout the continent.  May contains the country’s most important athletic event, the Bern Grand-Prix, and is the month that wraps-up the city’s Jazz Festival, which commences in the March of every year.  The Women’s Race in early June, along with the Bern Dance Days, lends this month its particular vibrancy.

In winter, three events make Bern a vacation magnet: The Onion Market, a traditional festival held every year towards the end of November, the festival(s) that surround the colorful Christmas decorations that string early December, and Bern Carnival, which is a night-time extravaganza that goes on from February 22-24.
