There is only one way to get around Old Pompeii: on foot, like the Romans did. There is a large lot directly outside the city gates where you can park your car for a flat fee, and then continue on foot. The attendants sometimes tell you that if you eat at a nearby restaurant, you can get your parking validated and the fee waived. Keep in mind that the meal will end up costing a lot more than the parking would have, but it may be worth it if you are very hungry.
Upon parking your car, all you have to do is walk up to the gates, buy a ticket, and poof! You are in 79 AD. However, there are a couple of variations on the walking theme: you can roam around by yourself, or sign up for a guided walking tour. The tours are usually an hour long and relatively inexpensive, though you still have to pay the entry fee and tip the guide at the end (it’s optional, but you may feel obligated). If you do choose to walk around by yourself, you can pick up some free pamphlets at the ticket booth to help focus your wanderings. Audio headsets are also available if you wish to go this route.
