Pompeii is a gated city, and the fact that it has only two entrances means it is fairly easy to find. There is only one main road leading in, and it is heavily trafficked and clearly marked with signs. The only thing you really have to worry about is getting to Italy in the first place, if you are an international traveler. The closest airport is in Naples, which is up the coast about 30 kilometers from Pompeii. The Naples International Airport , also called the Aeroporto Capodichino, is serviced by all major Italian and European cities as well as some hubs in the United States and other continents, though you may need to make a stopover or two.

From Naples, you have several means of getting to Pompeii: car, bus or train. If you choose to travel by car, you can easily rent one at the Naples airport. From the airport, get on the Autostrada (highway) A3, and take the Pompeii exit about twenty minutes later. The SITA bus can also take you where you need to go; get on the Naples to Salerno bus which will stop enroute in Pompeii. Finally, there is Trenitalia , the official Italian train system. The Circumvesuviana line passes through Pompeii and is quite cheap: under 10 Euros. Unfortunately, the schedule is in Italian, but since it is simply place names and fares non-Italian speakers should be able to manage.
