The Mercado de San Miguel has Beaux-Arts architecture and is made with iron and glass, finished in May, 1916. It has two floors with an area of 1200 square meters. The architect was Alfonso Dubé y Díez, and the design was similar to the Les Halles in Paris. In 1999 the Community of Madrid spent a large sum of money to renovate the market. However little by little the market deteriorated and could not compete with modern supermarkets and malls. A group called El Gastronomo de San Miguel bought the market and made it a gastronomic destination, similar to La Boqueria of Barcelona. The new market reopened in May, 2009. It offers high quality products, pastries, tapas, a wine bar, and gastronomic food, with 33 vendors. There are steel tables for picnics. It is located at the Plaza de San Miguel, closest to the east side of the Plaza Mayor.
