Without an Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or St. Peter’s to set it apart, Madrid has its charming Cibeles.  It’s a statue of the goddess of Earth, agriculture and fertility in the midst of a fountain which is surrounded by traffic most of the day. On special days when its team, Real Madrid, wins, fans jump into the fountain to celebrate the victory and honor its patron.  It’s across from the main post office which looks more like a cathedral than a government building.

LA FUENTE DE CIBELES - Madrid’s answer to the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty.  Its citizens remember this special goddess.
