Tourists who live in the United States may not be aware of some of the customs in Catalonia. So, it’s a good idea to become aware of some simple facts before traveling to Spain.

 

Meals are not served at the same time they typically are in the United States . In general, lunch is served from about 1:30 to 4:00 in the afternoon and dinner is served from 9:00 to 11:00 at night. This is a much later schedule that most Americans follow.

 

The nightlife in Catalonia does not get into full swing until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, and stores often close during the middle of the afternoon (generally from 2:00 to 4:00 for lunch and a break).

 

Tipping in Catalonia is necessary in restaurants and other places were it’s normal to leave something for good service. The average percentage for a tip is about seven to ten percent of the value of the meal or service.

 

The most regularly used ingredients in foods traditional to Catalonia are olive oil and garlic. So, anyone who does not enjoy the taste of these two items will probably have a hard time eating during a visit here!

 

When ordering a beer in Catalonia, make sure to distinguish whether or not a beer in a bottle or a draught beer is wanted. A “beer” means a beer in a bottle, and a “canya” means a draught beer.
