A stay to the Basque should include a visit to architectural mindblowing Guggenheim Museum. Designed by Architect Frank Gherry, this museum is Bilbao's gateway to the 21st century redefining the urban landscape. It houses one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art in the world. Ricahrd Serra, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Yves Klein, Fujiko Nakaya, Louise Bougeois, Mario Merz, Jannis Kounellis, Anselm Kiefer are among the artists featured in the permanent exhibition. The permanent collection,  now being exhibited, also includes an extensive collection of Abstract Expressionism with the painters who used the field of color techniques on large canvases. Some artists that can be mentioned are Jackson Pollock, Gene Davis, Larry Poons adnd Jack Youngerman.

Sine 1997 when the museum was inaugurated, past exhibitions have included shows honoring Basque sculptor Chillida, Fred Klein's multimedia experimentations, Aztec art, Rubens and treasures from Hermitage Museum, Calder's sculptures and a retrospective of Robert Rauschenberg among many temporary exhibitions.

The museum is located at Abandoibarra Avenue, 2. It is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. In July and August it opens Mondays.
