Oktoberfest is probably the world's most famous beer festival. At the same time it is a large non-permanent fun park with quite a number of rides. It takes place largely in the last two weeks each September at Theresienwiese, a ground located south west of central station. It centres on tents, some of which are brewery tents and some of which are not.

How Oktoberfest works

In the forums there arealways questions about how O-Fest works. Here a short summary:

  1. There is no kind of entrance fee or anything like this except for the attractions and rides.
  2. The beer tents also do not have any entrance fee. You can sit in the outside area or directly inside the tent.
  3. It is possible to reserve a table in advance directly at the offices of the tent owners. This is always connected to a pre-purchase of vouchers (10 meals and 20 beers). Normally the reservation phase begins in January. The chances are very low but you can give it a try.
  4. You get only a beer when you have a seat and it is not really allowed to stand around.

This was the theory. In reality most visitors want to be in the beer tents to experience the unique party time. So the most tents are crowded and already closed in the early afternoon. If you are in a group with more of four people it might be nearly impossible to get a seat. But the best is to get into the tent and then wait and try to get some spare seats.

There are 14 big beer tents and several smaller ones. The party will be great in any of them, so it's up to you to chose. Go early (if you don't have a reservation) in order to get inside and find a seat.

Expect higher prices in hotels at this time and expect most to get booked out.  If you plan visiting the Oktoberfest, make sure, to book your hotels or hostels, as early as possible. It's recommended at least 4-5 months in advance. Otherwise it can become very costly or almost impossible to find a hotel room.
