Historical castles make Germany a very popular travel destination for people from all over the world. There are more than 25,000 of them divided into two types: "Burg" (or fortress, the kind we equate with the Middle Ages and knights) and "Schloss" (or palace, the kind we equate with royalty, glamour and rich interiors and beautiful gardens). The most famous German castle is doubtless the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein in Bavaria on the Romantic Road, built by Ludwig II. ("Mad King Ludwig"), who sought to make Wagner's musical romanticism reality.
Another very magnificent and glorious palace is King Frederick II of Prussia's beautiful Sanssouci ("without worries") in Potsdam near Berlin. Known as Frederick the Great (Friedrich der Große), he entertained the leading philosophers, thinkers and crowned heads of Europe there.
No matter which castle you're visiting in Germany, the surrounding parks are well kept and mostly free for entry. Inside the castles you often find museums, exhibitions or even restaurants and hotels. Go here for some castle impressions...
