Travelers who fly directly in to Sligo via the Sligo Airport will likely find that it is unnecessary to rent a car.  Getting around Sligo can be accomplished easily without the use of a car because the area is compact enough to be explored on foot.  However, visitors may find that they want a rental car in order to take day trips away from Sligo during their vacation in the area.  The Sligo Airport does offer car rental service, through a single company (Avis: www.avis.com).  Because of the lack of competition in the industry, rental cars may be more expensive in Sligo than in other locations.

Travelers who fly in to the Dublin airport sometimes rent cars there and opt to drive to Sligo.  This is considered a good option as rental car rates may be cheaper in Dublin than in Sligo and the drive between the two is relatively short and definitely scenic.

Travelers who reach Sligo and do not have their own car transportation can hire taxis for getting around the larger Sligo area.  Taxis are not readily available on the street, although they can be hailed if they do pass.  There is a taxi stand on Quay Street, but the best bet is to call a taxi for pick-up from your hotel.  Travelers sometimes opt to hire taxis for multi-hour or half-day tours.  These can be pricey in terms of standard taxi rates but are generally inexpensive when thought of in terms of standard tour costs.
