Cardiff's weather varies greatly with the season, but can be quite unpredictable. In general, however, it lacks the extremes thanks to its sheltered position in the Bristol Channel - it is one of the mildest cities in the UK: snow in winter is rare, and throughout the year it is generally spared the higher rainfall associated with the upland areas of
Wales. Winters can nevertheless still be wet and raw, summers warm and sunny, but can get humid. However, when arriving from London there is an immediate contrast in the freshness to the air. Summer is a good time for visiting Cardiff because it is not usually excruciatingly hot, the way some popular tourist destinations can get in July and August. But for many, springtime is ideal because of the abundance of flowers that accompany the gentle weather, and it is a good time to get the best out of the city centre's extensive parkland. But beware of windy, rainy conditions that can pop up, especially during the spring months.
