Explore by foot
York's city centre is very compact and can be crossed on foot within 15 minutes. Many streets within the city walls are pedestrianised, though do be aware that some are not and others are only restricted for certain hours of the day.
All of York's attractions are easily reached on foot, though the National Railway Museum, on the fringe of the city centre, operates a road train to link it with the Minster.
Arrive by public transport
Some hotels and guest houses are situated just a little too far from the city centre to comfortably walk, but few are far from a local bus route. Parking in the centre of York can be both difficult and expensive, so leave the car behind as often as you can! York has a good and regular Park and Ride system from numerous locations on the outskirts of the City.
If arriving at the Station, a good choice is the FTR buses (the big double-jointed purple buses) which run from the station through the City Centre and then on to the University of York. For the City Centre alight at Clifford Street or Micklegate/Low Ousegate. (Clifford Street is the best option for Cliffords Tower and the Castle Museum).
