Covering an area of 368 square miles, Dartmoor contains the largest and wildest area of open country in the South of England. By virtue of its outstanding natural beauty it is one of the National Parks of England and Wales. Dartmoor ponies help to give the moors a unique character and are one of the attractions for visitors to the area. They are an integral part of the area’s cultural heritage. Ponies are also important for conservation grazing particularly on certain habitats such as wet permanent pasture.
South West Coastal PathThe South West Coast Path starts at Minehead in Somerset and runs along the part of the Somerset Bristol Channel coast, across North Devon, right round Cornwall, then along the South Devon and Dorset coasts to Poole Harbour. This is a distance of 630 miles which makes it by far the longest National Trail in Britain. The path is unique because it is based on a working footpath which was in use until comparatively modern times. Coastguards used to patrol the whole coast of the South West Peninsula on foot, every day, in the course of their duties in pursuit of Revenue protections against smuggling. It was the essence of their job that the coastguards had literally to be able to see into every cove and inlet on the coast. This meant that their well beaten path had to hug the cliff top, so providing the splendidly scenic coastal views you get today.
Berry Head, BrixhamBerry Head is Torbay’s most important wildlife site and one of England’s 200 National Nature Reserves. There are several species of rare and threatened plants growing at Berry Head, including Early Gentian, White Rock-Rose, Honewort, Small Hare’s Ear, Restharrow and Goldilock’s Aster which are dependent upon the thin soils, mild climate and exposed conditions of the headland. Two “Napoleonic war” forts dominate the headland, a dramatic reminder both of Torbay’s former military importance and a nation’s fear of invasion. Now fully protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, the forts provide the site’s strongest link with the past and a fantastic viewpoint.
