Although Canmore itself might not be a large metropolitan city, with a population of less than 15,000, it is accustomed to large visitor crowds thanks to its proximity to the Canadian Rockies and Banff National Park
To that end, there are a few easy ways to get around town. You can drive, of course, and even if you end up choosing other modes of transportation once there, having a rental car might be a necessity in order to get you from the airport to Canmore.
Once in Canmore, if you want to ditch the car and use less high-tech modes of travel, there are two primary choices: hiking and biking. Canmore is well suited to hiking as a way to get around town. There are hiking trails in town and around town, so you can not only get from point A to point B, but get a beautiful view of the Rockies while doing so.
If you want to enjoy that beautiful view but also feel the wind in your hair, the wind at your back, or just the wind, period, try biking. This is another excellent way to enjoy the great beauty of the area while getting some fresh air (crisp, certain times of the year) and exercise at the same time.
