Lake Tahoe, that straddles the California and Nevada borders, is favorite destination for skiers and snowboarders. There are many downhill resorts all around the lake, some of the resorts have interchangeable tickets so you can sample more than one ski area.

Here are the resorts with a brief description of each:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

Heavenly Ski Resort - 3500' vertical, 4800 acres, 30 lifts including and aerial tram and gondola. Lake Tahoe's largest ski area straddles CA and NV. You can get on a lift in California and ski down into Nevada.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort - 2000' vertical, 2300 acres, 15 lifts. A self contained resort 33 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

Sierra-at-Tahoe - 2212' vertical, 2000 acres, 15 lifts. 12 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe Ski Resort - 1800' vertical, 1200 acres and 8 lifts, two of which are surface lifts. It is the closest area to Reno, NV just 25 minutes away on clear roads.

Diamond Peak - 1840' vertical, 655 acres with 6 lifts located in the Village of Incline.

Northstar California - 2280' vertical, 3170 acres with 20 lifts including 2 gondola. One of Lake Tahoe's premier four season, self-contained resort.

Tahoe Donner - 600' vertical, 120 acres, 5 lifts, 3 are surface lifts. Part of the private Tahoe Donner Homeowners Assoc., but open to the public.

Alpine Meadows - 1802' vertical, 2400 acres, 11 chairlifts, 2 surface lifts. One of North Lake Tahoe's most challenging resorts.

Squaw Valley USA - 2850' vertical, 4000 acres, 33 lifts licluding an aerial tram and gondola. Site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, North Lake's largest ski area.

Donner Ski Ranch - 750' vertical, 400 acres, 8 lifts including 2moving carpets. Family oriented, budget concisous ski area off Highway 40.

Boreal Mountain Resort - 500' vertical, 380 acres, 8 lifts. Smaller ski area off Interstate 80, a popular day spot.

Sugar Bowl - 1500' vertical, 1500 acres, 13 lifts. Counting Walt Disney among its founders, Sugar Bowl is one of the oldest ski areas in Tahoe and has a very European feel in the village and steep trails; it is only 17% beginner, but ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers.

The Heavenly ski resort area had beautful views of Lake Tahoe.  Plus there is something for everyone with skiing and the casinos. However, use caution on the runs with thin paths - snowboarders often stop in the middle, so you you will have to stop in order to not hit them.
