You will find a wide range of performances, music and art throughout the city of Quebec. Dozens of bars in the city stay open late at night with live music of all types, and theaters frequently present shows featuring dance, folk, jazz, the music of Quebec, and more.
Traditional theatre performances can be found at local landmarks like the
Theatre Capitole
, on Rue St. Jean, and the
Palais Montcalm, which features classical performances and plays, and also smaller scale shows at the nearby
Cafe Spectacle. For more modern theater, try the
Theatre de la Bordée
.
The Grand Theater of Quebec is home to the Quebec Symphony Orchestra and also to the Quebec Opera . Visitors may also find regular summer concerts held at the Plains of Abraham historic site's Edwin-Bélanger Bandstand . Concerts have also been held at the Old Port's Agora , but the future of this site seems to be in doubt. http://www.sauvonslagora.com/
Vielle Quebec (the Old City) has a large number of fine street performers, who are licensed by the city. Most performers are bilingual, and will canvass the audience at the start of the show to find out how many English- and French-speakers are in the audience, so that they can tailor their show accordingly. Performances go almost continuously outside the Chateau Frontenac (by the statue of Samuel de Champlain) and Place d'Armes (near the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec)--watch for locations with bleachers for spectators. Other, more random locations, have more sporadic performances. After you've enjoyed a half-hour show (or "spectacle", in French), it's only fair to make a contribution when the hat is passed.
Quebec City is one of the cultural highlights of Canada. No matter what kind of artistic or cultural performance you are in the mood for, chances are you will be able to find it.
