Step back into the year 1918!

Captain James Harris was a British military officer during the reign of Queen Victoria.    The Benares Historic House, located at 1507 Clarkson Road North, was the corner stone of his estate.    A short walk through the park-like setting brings you to the grand red-brick Georgian style home where four generations of the Harris and Sayers families lived.    Captain Harris’s great-grandchildren donated the property to the Ontario Heritage Foundation.

The house has been restored to reflect the quiet and elegant look of 1918 living.    With its handmade furniture, you can feel the warmth and pride of workmanship.    It is a vision of gracious living from the early 20th century.

Filled with original family possessions from top to bottom, tour guides share stories of the family's joys and traditions while you stroll about the house and explore the decorated rooms filled with original family artefacts.    In the children’s room are a crokinole board and a homemade 1896 dollhouse that looks like the Benares house itself.

This Georgian style home brings a touch of stateliness to Mississauga .
