Professional theatre is everywhere in Calgary, and in wildly diverse forms. Theatre Calgary and ATP are two mainstream theatre companies which are housed in the Epcor Centre for the Perfoming Arts. Also at the Epcor Centre is the decidedly un-mainstream One Yellow Rabbit theatre company, which hosts the famous annual High Performance Rodeo festival for new and experimental performances, drawing in different performers from around the world.

Outside of the Epcor Centre, you can find the improvisational theatre of Loose Moose Theatre Company . At the base of the Calgary Tower is Vertigo Mystery Theatre, which often features the plays of Dame Agatha Christie. Theatre Junction focusses on contemporary plays. Sage Theatre is a new theatre company that emphasizes nurturing new talent, especially behind the stage in production and directorial roles. They host the annual Ignite! theatre festival for rising artists in theatre, vistual art, music, and dance. Storybook Theatre focusses on theatre for children aged three to ten.

The flagship of classical music is the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra , which performs regularly in the Jack Singer Concert Hall in the Epcor Centre. The 2000 seat Jack Singer Concert Hall is a world class facility boasting some of the finest accoustics in North America, and is the home of the magnificent 6008-pipe Carthy Organ built by Casavant Frères, while the Eckhardt-Gramatté Recital Hall at  the University of Calgary's Rozsa Centre has the new  Ronald B. Bond Bach Organ , built by Jürgen Ahrend in 2006. The Calgary Pro Musica Society arranges concerts of chamber music by well-known performers such as I Musici of Montreal. Calgary Opera stages a number of operas each year at the Jubilee Auditorium, ranging from Carmen to  Dead Man Walking to new operas commissioned by the company, such as Filumena by John Estacio & John Murrell. If you're interested in something lighter than full-on operat, check out the Cowtown Opera Company. They take classic operas, sing them in English, and add their own unique and irreverent twist.

There are a number of well-established folk music clubs in Calgary which bring in many popular folk entertainers: the Bow Valley Music Club  , Calgary Folk Club , Nickelodeon Music Club , Rocky Mountain Folk Club , and Saturday Night Special Folk Club .

Dance:  Alberta Ballet has been offering ballet to Calgarians for over forty years. Their productions range from traditional ( Carmina Burana) to more modern ( Dancing Joni, about Joni Mitchell). They also host touring companies, such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) has a distinct and eclectic style that mixes groove, African roots, rhythm, improvisation, interplay with musicians, and deeply human soul. For two decades, its unique style has distinguished DJD on the international jazz dance stage.

If you walk around the city you can sometimes see street performances during the warmer months. Anytime between spring and summer is your best chance to see these, and they can be a real treat. There are often a number of other small acts and performances that go on throughout the city, but it is best to check local listings before planning anything for sure.
