Alberta is the home of Canada's finest beef, so it shouldn't be too surprising that Calgary has some darn good steak houses. What else would you expect from Cowtown?

Downtown

Caesar's Steak House; Hy's Steak House - Hy's and Caesar's are Calgary's two finest steak houses, home of many legendary oil business lunches. The Calgary location was the first restaurant in the Hy's chain.   Hy's Steakhouse in Calgary closed for renovations in late 2007.  As of Aug 2009, it had not yet opened in a different location, but still is on record as planning to do so.

Keg - The Keg offers a more contemporary take on steaks. There are many locations across Calgary.

Japanese Village - Specializing in Japanese "teppan yaki" cooking.

Vintage Chophouse and Tavern

Saltlik, A Rare Steakhouse

Outside of downtown but also known to be great

Nick's Steak House - Located a short walk north of Motel Village, Nick's has classic 70's steakhouse decor, and the classic steaks to go with it. Located close to McMahon Stadium, Nick's is a long-time favourite with university students for their pizzas as well as the occasional steak splurge. 2430 Crowchild Trail N.W.

Carver's Steakhouse - Said to be excellent (and expensive), it is in the Sheraton Cavalier in the NE by the airport. If you are staying in town or stopping at the airport for a couple of hours, this could be a good place to go.

Wellington's - Located in the south part of Calgary, just off Macleod Trail.  This place is legendary for serving great steaks and other delicacies.  The service here is outstanding, and so is the food.  There is a dining room and a lounge with big screen TV.  They are located at 10325 Bonaventure Dr SE.  Open weekdays from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, and evenings open Monday to Saturday from 5 pm to 11 pm and Sundays from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  Phone: 403 278-5250.  Reservations are recommended, but not required.

Graze Grill - Located inside the Executive Royal Inn on Barlow Trail, great food and service for a reasonable price. Prime rib is fantastic and cheaper than most. If you are up for it, there is a 5 lb steak challenge with a time limit of one hour. There is also a 100 item salad bar every night.

Smugglers Inn - On the east side of Macleod Trail, just south of Glenmore Trail. This classic 70's steak house features a dark interior, wood panelling, booths, lots of upholstered chairs, and a quiet casual atmosphere. Although there is a salad bar and a soup bar included with most menu items, Smuggler's figures most steak lovers want a steak and a spud; other hot veggies are available for an additional charge. Prime rib is the house specialty. 6920 Macleod Trail South.
