Mexico City is a travelers gem. It is a big city, no doubt, but the people are wonderful and courteous and the food is fantastic. The longer we stayed there, the more we liked it. Weather in June was cool and refreshing and the air quality was great---blue skies every day. The architecture is colonial, prehispanic, post-arrival of the Spaniards, and down right enchanting. Safety issues are no different here than in any other large city---contrary to what most travel writers whine about. We had no problems. Driving in and out of the City from the airport was an experience, but actually less strenuous than driving in WDC!---drivers are courteous and don't yell or honk or drive crazy like here.

San Miguel de Allende and Morelia were our favorite cities--clean, beautiful, full of great shopping and great food everywhere. Guanajuato is more problematic. The city is an architectural gem, but there is not much to do there and the heavy traffic on very narrow streets and the tunnel roads result in much foul air and city smells.  We drove to Tula to see what is described as a site on par with Tenochitlan where the pyramids (Sun and Moon) are, but Tula was a disappointment---not much but mounds of rocks. Better to go to Tenochitlan. But, on the way back to MCity, we stopped at Tepotstitlan (spell.?) outside of MC---the church is a roccoco trip with gold gilt all over the place, including the biggest dispaly of angels I've ever seen. The restaurant there is great.

The Anthropology Museum in MC is one of the best in the world---an amazing collection of artifacts. But, there are few explanatory signs in English or any other language, so take your dictionary. So is Bellas Artes--an amazing building in and out with murals by Orozzco, Rivera, and Siqueiros on the upper levels.

All in all, we highly recommend traveling to and in Mexico. It is far cheaper than Europe, closer, and a truly enchanting land. The people are laid back, gentle, courteous, friendly, helpful and many are exceptionally handsome---and such great cooks! A caution--if you rent a car, it is better to have at least one passenger who speaks Spanish because when you get lost, few people speak English!
